This movie has not yet been released to the public. There is no cost to attend for NAITA and InfraGard members. Made in America is the fourth in a series of informative case-related movies focused on counterintelligence threats to U.S. companies. Made in America is based on a real investigation involving an Iranian proliferation network; however, the lessons learned are country agnostic and the “red flags” highlighted apply to all countries whose proliferation of exported, dual-use technologies could cause harm to our Nation’s security.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) protects the United States against foreign intelligence operations and espionage. Today, more foreign spies – not just traditional adversaries but also allies, hackers, and terrorists – are trying to steal more of our secrets from more places than ever before. What do they want? Our country’s classified information, of course – from military plans to national security vulnerabilities to our own intelligence activities. But increasingly, they also want our country’s trade secrets – innovations that give us a leg up in the global marketplace – and seemingly harmless technologies that could be used to develop or improve weapons of mass destruction.
The FBI’s foreign counterintelligence squad collects, analyzes, and utilizes information to identify and neutralize activities of foreign powers and their agents that could adversely affect U.S. national security. The FBI’s counterintelligence program strives to be predictive and proactive and to maintain a protective umbrella around the nation’s critical technology, infrastructure, and information. Both the economic aspects of foreign collection and export control issues are quickly rising in frequency and severity.
Following the movie, FBI Special Agent Kerry Straub will provide FBI commentary, including an overview of illicit proliferation methodologies and indicators, as well as a case study presentation of actual events. Davis Barlow, Assistant United States Attorney, Northern District of Alabama; and Spencer Schneider, Acting Resident Agent in Charge, Homeland Security Investigations, will join Kerry for a panel discussion on how U.S. companies can be targeted, how to safeguard information and technology, and recognizing a potential threat.

Join NAITA, the Alabama District Export Council, and BIS Ambassador Sponsor DHL Express USA for this official Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) Seminar on Complying with U.S. Export Controls. This two-day program on 11/5-6 is led by BIS’s professional counseling staff and provides an in-depth examination of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). The program will cover the information exporters need to know to comply with U.S. export control requirements on commercial goods.
The program will focus on what items and activities are subject to the EAR; steps to take to determine the export licensing requirements for your item; how to determine your export control classification number (ECCN); when you can export or re-export without applying for a license; export clearance procedures and record keeping requirements. Presenters will conduct a number of “hands-on” exercises that will prepare you to apply the regulations to your own company’s export activities. This program is well suited for those who need a comprehensive understanding of their obligations under the EAR.
On 11/7, the seminar will focus on the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls.
